Local hosted server drops friends

I am wanting to play Starbound with a friend but every time he connects to my server he loses connection a few seconds later.

I have turned off my firewall and forwarded port 21025 and he can connect via my IP (no hamachi or other vpn software) and the server shows him connect but then he loses connection with the message "Client server connection is no longer valid"

We were able to play just fine before the "giraffe" updates.

any suggestions?
